What is a social media handle?
A social media handle is the unique username that identifies an account on a platform — the @name in its URL — and, unlike a display name, only one account per platform can hold it.
Also called username, @name.
Scarcity is the whole of it. A display name can be duplicated freely; a handle cannot. That makes the exact-match handle for a brand a single asset per platform, and one that is very often already held by someone else — a dormant personal account, a fan page, or a holder who registered it deliberately.
Handles are generally not transferable through any official platform process. A brand that wants one someone else holds is in a negotiation, not an application, and the work is identifying the real holder, approaching them without revealing which brand is asking, and agreeing terms before the name is repriced.
Where a platform does offer a release route, it is usually tied to inactivity or to a trade mark claim, and neither is quick or certain.
